Description
A protest was carried out by residents of Theerthakarai against Ilmenite sand mining occurring from Alambil to Theerthakarai in the Mullaitivu District. The mining was stopped after the protest. A special meeting was organised at the District Secretariat in Mullaitivu, after which officers visited to the place to Ilmenite mining in Alambil to Theerthakarai. Information on this was shared with residents of the area by the former Pradeshiya Sabha member Thurairasa Raviharan, after which they organised a protest against this action.

State Response
There was a quarrel between villagers and the officers, as villagers stopped government officers from entering their property to assess the coastline. Following discussion with the residents, the visiting officers immediately stopped action on mining at this location.
